CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (March 22, 2013) – Five members of the Rutgers gymnastics team earned All-East Atlantic Gymnastics League status at the annual conference awards banquet Friday at the University of North Carolina. Junior Luisa Leal (Cali, Colombia) won the EAGL Team MVP honor for the first time in her career, while freshman Jenna Williams (Bordentown, N.J.) made first team in two events. Junior Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.), freshman Claudia Salinas (Allendale, N.J.) and senior Danielle D’Elia (Colts Neck, N.J.) also took home honors for their excellence throughout the season.
The All-EAGL teams were tabulated based on the current regional qualifying scores (RQS).
Leal returned to the lineup in 2013 after just competing in two meets a season ago to pick up Team MVP. A First Team All-Vault member for the second time, she leads RU with a 9.840 RQS in the event. She also has thrived on the floor exercise, notching a career-high 9.950 mark at Towson March 8 for the highest RU score in any event on the year. Leal will compete all-around for the sixth straight week Saturday, having posted a school record 39.500 in the Towson meet.
Williams earned both First Team All-Vault and All-Uneven Bars for her consistent performance in her first collegiate season. A two-time EAGL Rookie of the Week winner, she has an RQS of 9.815 on the vault and 9.835 on the uneven bars. Her best meet of the season came March 2 at home when she posted a 9.900 on the uneven bars, 9.800 on the vault and 9.750 on the balance beam.
Gunzelman joined Williams on First Team All-Uneven Bars, registering an RQS of 9.825 over 11 meets. Her season high-water mark of 9.850 was achieved four times, as the junior has competed all-around five times this year. She was a second-team selection on the uneven bars in 2012.
The fourth Scarlet Knights to make a first team, Salinas led RU with a 9.800 RQS on the balance beam. The freshman notched a season-high 9.850 score on two occasions, competing 10 times.
D’Elia picks up a spot on the Second Team All-Floor Exercise for the second straight season after cumulating a 9.825 RQS. She performed in the event in all 11 meets, registering a career-high 9.900 at the Livingston Recreation Center February 2.
