PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tim Pernetti was named one of five finalists for Athletic Director of the Year in the 2013 Sports Business Awards, presented by Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily.
Mike Holder of Oklahoma State, Tom Jurich of Louisville, Jim Phillips of Northwestern and Mal Moore of Alabama are the four other finalists.
The Sports Business Awards recognize excellence and outstanding achievement in the business of sports for the period from March 1, 2012 through February 28, 2013. Athletic directors from colleges and universities in the United States were eligible.
Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony that will be held Wednesday, May 22, at the New York Marriott Marquis at Times Square.
Now in his fourth year at his alma mater, Pernetti has come full-circle in becoming one of the nation’s youngest leaders in college athletics.
He was a key factor in Rutgers’ move into the Big Ten Conference, the nation’s premier athletic and academic conference. In addition, Pernetti has continued transform the student-athlete experience at Rutgers by investing in facilities and the key areas of academic support and life skills.
Pernetti also continues to develop the business by creating new revenue generating relationships and ventures in venue naming rights (Audi, High Point Solutions), apparel (Nike), food service and concessions (Sodexo) in his constant goal of reducing the University investment in athletics. He has grown the revenue into the department in each of his year’s “On the Banks.”
