DURHAM, N.H. (March 12, 2013) – Junior Luisa Leal (Cali, Columbia) of the Rutgers gymnastics program has been named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Gymnast of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. She set a school record with a 39.500 all-around score in the win at Towson last Friday.

“Luisa rocked every routine,” head coach Louis Levine said. “That performance is what she is capable of, being one of the best gymnasts in Rutgers history. She was able to put it all together, hitting all four events. This is a well-deserved honor.”

Leal broke through in her fourth all-around meet of the season to set the program record, topping her previous high of 39.375 achieved as a freshman Feb. 26, 2011. She finished at least tied for first in the meet in every event, setting career-highs on both the floor exercise (9.950) and the uneven bars (9.875). One of the judges gave Leal a perfect 10.000 mark for her floor routine.

It is the third career weekly honor for Leal, who won EAGL Gymnast of the Week twice as a freshman in 2011.

Rutgers gymnastics returns to action Friday, March 15 at 7 p.m. in a meet at West Virginia. The Scarlet Knights sit .170 behind Iowa State for the final NCAA Regional spot.
