PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 24, 2012) – The Rutgers gymnastics program has named senior Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) and juniors Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.) and Alyssa Straub (Nazareth, Pa.) team captains for the 2013 season, head coach Louis Levine announced Wednesday.

“My staff and I are excited to announce the naming of our three captains for the gymnastics season,” said Levine. “They have all proven to be leaders in both the classroom and the gym. All three know what it takes to be a Scarlet Knight.  Their leadership qualities will help lead us to a successful season that will continue to build on the foundation that has been laid the past few seasons.”

Outside of the gym, all three have proven to be leaders in the classroom. The trio was named to the Eastern Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) All-Academic Team and each received a Scholastic All-America Award from the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) for the 2011-12 season. Zito compiled a 3.57 GPA (Mathematics), Gunzelman notched a 3.53 (Exercise Science and Sport Studies) and Straub recorded a 3.78 (Public Health).

Zito, who will serve her second stint as team captain, earned EAGL Second Team All-Floor Exercise honors in 2012. Last season, she notched a career-high 9.875 on the floor on Alumni Night against Air Force, Bridgeport and Eastern Michigan on Feb. 25.

Making it to NCAA Regionals in 2012, Gunzelman had a productive season. She was awarded the EAGL Team MVP for the second-straight year. She received EAGL First Team All-Around honors, as well as Second Team All-Floor Exercise and Uneven Bars accolades. At the EAGL Championships, Gunzelman was recognized as a First Team All-Tournament participant.

A Nazareth, Pa., native, Straub was named All-EAGL Second Team All-Around and made Second Team EAGL All-Tournament. She competed in all 12 meets and notched a season-best 38.625 at Pittsburgh on Feb. 4. She also tallied a season-best 9.750 on the floor exercise at the EAGL Championships on March 24.
