MacConnell graduated from Plainfield High School in 1976 and has since spent over 20 years promoting New Jersey athletes. MacConnell graduated from Rutgers in 1980 and, upon graduation, began a two-year stint as the assistant public relations director for the New Jersey Nets. He then spent two years as the director of public relations for the New Jersey Generals before joining the Atlantic 10 in a similar capacity, a position he held until 1986, when he returned to Rutgers.
MacConnell started his Rutgers tenure as the director of media relations before assuming his current role of associate director of athletics for external affairs. He is responsible for the marketing, promotions, corporate sponsorship, radio and television for Rutgers athletics. Additionally, he oversees the Sports Media Relations and Information Office and the Ticket Office, and coordinates all aspects of the marketing and promotions for the entire athletic division.
In addition, MacConnell has served as the Tournament Manager for 12 NCAA Championships, including the 1996 NCAA Final Four at the Meadowlands. The on-site Director of the 2001 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships, MacConnell has also been the Chair of the Men’s BIG EAST Soccer Committee since 1995, a member of the Women’s Basketball Committee and was a member of the NCAA Soccer Committee for the Mid- Atlantic Region from 1994-1996.
