April-04-03 Bullpen Keys Doubleheader Split With Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH, PA – After dropping the opening game, 5-4, in the final inning, the Rutgers baseball team used 6.1 stellar innings of relief from four different pitchers to hold on for a 7-5 win in the nightcap, splitting today’s doubleheader. Freshman Bobby Acampora (Ocean Twp., NJ) set the tone for the quartet of relievers by allowing just one unearned run in 3.0 innings, while Steve Normane (Pt. Pleasant, NJ) keyed a four-run third inning with a two-run homerun. With the split, Rutgers is now 8-12 overall and 2-2 in BIG EAST play.

The Scarlet Knights earned a 4-1 victory against the Mountaineers in a shortened match. RU took the only two doubles matches that were completed, while also notching victories in three of the four singles bouts that were completed.

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ - Freshmen Jim Jansen (Pascack Valley, NJ) and Matt Pustay (Hamilton, NJ) turned in strong pitching efforts, while Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ) homered in the third inning to lead Rutgers past Monmouth, 8-2, today in West Long Branch. Proving that the second time is a charm, Jansen rebounded from a rough outing in his first collegiate start to earn his first win, while Pustay provided another impressive relief outing to earn his first collegiate save. With the win, RU is now 7-11, while Monmouth falls to 4-13.
