PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Fifth-year senior
Sebastian Joseph of the Rutgers football program was announced on Monday as a nominee for the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, one of the most prestigious off-the-field honors in college football. In additions to contributions on the field, the defensive lineman has displayed a commitment to community service throughout his time on campus.
Â
Since 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team
® has brought together a select group of college football players from across the country to honor their dedication to volunteerism and enriching the lives of others. While players are often recognized for their accomplishments and achievements on game day, these student-athletes have made significant contributions to the greater good of society, inspiring future generations of young athletes and the larger college football community. Recent Scarlet Knights nominated include
Derrick Nelson, Quentin Gause, David Milewski, Brandon Coleman, Khaseem Greene and Scott Vallone.
Â
A native of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, Joseph has dedicated time to numerous causes such as Saturdays in Motion, Bright Beginnings Learning Center, New Jersey Special Olympics, Read Across America, Rutgers Dance Marathon, Walk to Believe and more. He has also made trips to hospitals, served food to the homeless and volunteered at area youth football organizations.
Â
In addition, Joseph spent his 2017 spring break traveling to South Africa for a service trip through Athletes in Action. It involved visiting University of KwaZulu-Natal and UKZN Howard to start a ministry program.
Â
On the field, Joseph has played in 38 career games with 23 starts at nose tackle for the Scarlet Knights. He made 30 tackles in 2016 with 3.5 for loss, a sack, a forced fumble and a blocked field goal. Already having graduated as a journalism and media studies major with a minor in labor relations, the two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection is now working on a master's in labor relations.

The 22 finalists for the Good Works Team will be unveiled in September.
