
Men’s Track Launches Season at TCNJ Winter Opener

Scarlet Knights claim two events wins at The Armory
BRONX, N.Y. (Dec. 2, 2017) – Rutgers men's track and field began the new season at the TCNJ Winter Opener at the Armory with two event wins and five runner-up finishes on Saturday.
Sophomore Tobi Tella claimed the triple jump with a leap of 15.18 meters (49' 9.75") to beat out teammates Malachi Davis, Jairus Paul and Jaquan Mial, who finished second through fourth in the event. Sophomore Jason Schweizer won the Rutgers-dominated 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:32.62 as the Scarlet Knights finished 1-2-3 in the field of 14. Sophomores Sean Martinek and Andrew Comito, and freshmen Steve Steinberg-McIlroy and Alexander Pai rounded out spots 2, 3, 5 and 6, respectively.
Freshman Edwyn Pierre made a memorable debut for Rutgers with an 8.56-second 60-meter hurdles in the prelims, only to follow it up with a faster 8.46 seconds in the final on Saturday evening and a second place overall finish. Pierre would go on to finish seventh in the 300-meter dash in a field of 36 with a timed finals time of 35.96.
In the 600-meter, five Scarlet Knights were in the top half of the finishers with Edward Zalek taking fourth, with freshman Eric Barnes close behind in sixth, freshman Ryan Downey in 10th, sophomore Jared Skalski in 11th and junior Dimitri Demos in 13th.
Junior Conor Murphy continues to lead the distance crew with a runner-up finish in the 3,000-meter run, while sophomore Patrick Warren turned in a second place performance in the long jump with a mark of 6.63 meters (21' 9").
The Scarlet Knights take off for winter break until Jan. 13 for the Towson Tiger Invitational at the Armory in the Bronx.
