PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 22 Rutgers women's soccer travels to No. 7 and second-seeded West Virginia for the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday. Match time is set for 7 p.m. ET in Morgantown.
RUTGERS QUICK HITS
- Rutgers (13-2-5, 6-2-3 Big Ten) defeated La Salle by a score of 3-1 to advance to the Second Round.
- Three different Scarlet Knights contributed goals, including freshmen forward Amirah Ali and midfielder Alexa Ferreira, and sophomore forward Brittany LaPlant.
- Senior forward Colby Ciarrocca added a career-high two assists, while sophomore midfielder Taylor Aylmer and Ali contributed an assist each as well.
- Ciarrocca and Ali, the 2017 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, are tied for the team lead with 17 points (6g, 5a).
- The Scarlet Knights enter NCAAs with a nation-best 0.283 GAA, while also ranked second in team shutout percentage (0.75) with 15 clean sheets in 20 contests.
- Redshirt junior Casey Murphy, the 2017 Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year, leads the conference and is second in the nation in shutouts (15), and third in GAA (0.283) and save percentage (.918).
- RU qualified for its sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament, also marking the Scarlet Knights' eighth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 10 years and the 12th time in program history.
SCOUTING WEST VIRGINIA
- West Virginia (16-3-2, 7-1-1 Big 12) topped Bucknell, 3-0, in the First Round on Saturday to move on. Michaela Abam scored two goals, while Sh'Nia Gordon added the third.
- WVU advanced the Big 12 Semifinal this season. Despite a 1-1, double-overtime draw, the Mountaineers fell to TCU in penalty kicks, 5-3.
- West Virginia ranks second in the nation in shots per game (21.19) and fourth in corner kicks per game (7.62).
- Amanda Pierre-Louis was named Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Year after aiding the defense to 11 shutouts this season and a league-best 0.43 GAA in conference action.
- Pierre-Louis, Abam and Bianca St. Georges were named to the All-Big 12 First Team. Carla Portillo, Vanessa Flores, Easther Mayi Kith and Rylee Foster were named to the Second Team.
- West Virginia qualified for the Tournament for the 18th straight season.
SERIES VS. THE MOUNTAINEERS
- Rutgers and West Virginia have met 17 times in program history with a majority of the contests as former BIG EAST foes.
- The Mountaineers hold an 11-4-2 lead in the all-time series dating back to 1996.
- Most recently, RU and WVU played to a 0-0 draw in the First Round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament. The Mountaineers would advance with a 3-0 win in penalty kicks.
