Throughout the week of Feb. 27, over 50 student-athletes volunteered their time to attend elementary schools in the Middlesex County area for the annual Read Across America Week. This year, Rutgers Athletics partnered with 17 schools and joined them to read some of Dr. Seuss’ best work.
“Read Across America was a great event this year,” said freshman Kevin Condal of the men’s track and field team, a McKinley Elementary School graduate. ‘It’s an excellent feeling to give back to the youth.”
Many of the student-athletes also used the time to inspire the kids to reach their full potential.
Senior Mel Brother of the gymnastics team explained, “It was a really rewarding experience to inspire kids to read and strive to become athletes in college one day.”
Read Across America is a week-long event that takes place in honor of Dr. Seuss and all of his whimsical books. Rutgers Athletics has been taking part in this event for nearly 20 years and looks forward to continuing its tradition in years to come.
