PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers women’s lacrosse senior Jessica Apel (Bridgewater, NJ) was named to the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association’s (IWLCA) Academic Honor Roll.
Apel was one of 87 student-athletes to earn the honor by achieving at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA and is either a junior or senior. She is the seventh Scarlet Knight to be named to the honor roll since it began in 1998. Apel, who served as a tri-captain in 2003, graduated from Rutgers College with a degree in biology in May.
Apel started in all 16 games during her senior campaign, scoring 11 goals
while dishing three assists. She led the team to a 9-8 victory at Pennsylvania
on April 1, scoring a career-best four goals. She also collected 17 ground
balls, 16 caused turnovers and 13 draw controls during her final season “on
the Banks.” She finished her four-year career with 23 goals and 11 assists
for 34 points. Apel received the Rutgers President’s Award for earning
a 4.0 GPA in one semester and has been named a BIG EAST Academic
All-Star three times (2000-01, 2001-02, 2002-03).
Rutgers completed the 2003 season with a 12-4 overall record, 3-3 in BIG EAST
play. The Knights, led by first year head coach and BIG EAST Coach of the Year
Laura Brand, returned to the national rankings (20th) for the first time in
three seasons.
