PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers women’s lacrosse head coach Laura Brand has announced that Jackson Memorial High School senior Katie Batiuk has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Scarlet Knights for the 2003-04 academic year. Batiuk is the sixth and final member of Brand’s inaugural recruiting class.
“Katie is the perfect addition to our program,” said Brand. “Her exceptional speed and game sense make her a threat at any position. Not only will Katie add a great deal to our offense, but her defensive presence should prove to be a tremendous asset. We expect Katie to make a significant impact right from the start.”
Batiuk, a midfielder, entered her senior season with the Jaguars with 196 career goals, 117 career assists and 313 career points. She has already passed the 200-career goal mark and is on pace to break the state’s high school scoring record in 2003. A two-time selection to both the All-Shore Conference and All-Ocean County First Teams, Batiuk was the 2002 Ocean County Player of the Year, the Jackson-Howell Player of the Year and a second-team all-state pick. She finished second in the state scoring race last year with 102 goals and 51 assists.
A year-round athlete, Batiuk has also played four years of varsity soccer with the Jaguars, earning all-Ocean County, all-Shore Conference and all-Class A South honors. As a freshman in 1999, she set the Jackson record for the most goals scored by a rookie. Batiuk also played three years of basketball.
Batiuk joins Amanda Cymore (Nyack, NY/ Nyack), Jamie Farewell (Medford Lakes, NJ/ Shawnee), Annie Marchitello (Medford Lakes, NJ/ Shawnee), Sarah Soden (Monroe Twp., NJ/ St. John Vianney) and Alison Waszmer (Mahopac, NY/ Mahopac) as members of the Scarlet Knights’ Class of 2007.
