Rutgers Tops UConn 9-6 for BIG EAST Win

  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s lacrosse team (8-3, 1-2 BIG EAST) picked up its first conference win of the season as the Scarlet Knights defeated BIG EAST rival, Connecticut (5-5, 0-3 BIG EAST), 9-6, on Yurcak Field Saturday.

    Rutgers led off the scoring with a goal from Maggie Bopp (Lindenhurst, NY), but UConn answered with Tracy Mullaney’s first of four goals to tie the score, 1-1. Bopp scored her second goal of the afternoon less than a minute later, pushing RU back in front (2-1). At the 20:08 mark, Bonnie Wehinger scored for the Huskies to knot the score at two apiece. RU returned to the lead when senior Melissa Mosey (Skaneateles, NY) scored her first of three goals. Mullaney scored two more goals for UConn, giving the Huskies their only lead of the day (4-3), but Mosey scored twice before the end of the half, giving the Knights the 5-4 advantage at the break.

    The second half belonged to Rutgers as senior Kate Slotman (Moorestown, NJ) and junior Cristina Curiale (Summit, NJ) scored two early goals to increase the Knights’ lead to three (7-4). Slotman scored two more goals for the hat trick, increasing RU’s lead to five (9-4), but Mullaney and Kariane Lauri each scored one goal before the half ended and Rutgers took the conference win, 9-6.

    Sophomore Lyndsey Feldman (Ft. Myers, FL) made eight saves in cage for the Knights, while April Pollock and Jennifer Wong combined for seven saves for the Huskies.

    RU remains at home, hosting Manhattan on Tuesday, April 15, at 3:30 p.m. on Yurcak Field.
