PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers women’s lacrosse team (7-3) picked up its first upset of the season as senior Melissa Mosey (Skaneateles, NY) and junior Cali Wojdyla (Liverpool, NY) led the Knights to a 15-12 victory against No. 14 Yale (7-3) on the Rutgers Stadium turf Wednesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead before junior Cristina Curalie (Summit, NJ) got the Knights on the board at the 20:51 mark. Junior Jessica Mosey (Skaneateles, NY) then cut the Yale lead to one (3-2) when she scored off a pass from senior Jessica Apel (Bridgewater, NJ). The Bulldogs returned their lead to two with goals from Miles Whitman and Sarah Queener, making the score 5-2.
The Knights would not stay down for long, beginning a five-goal run with Wojdyla’s first tally of the afternoon, a free-position shot. Senior Claire Grooms (Camillus, NY) scored with an assist from Curiale and senior Kristin Checksfield (Collingswood, NJ) thentied the score, 5-5, with an unassisted goal at the 13:15 mark. Apel gave RU its first lead of the day with an unassisted goal at 8:21 and, at 8:10, senior Kate Slotman (Moorestown, NJ) scored when Checksfield fed her the ball off the draw. Whitman scored her third goal of the day for Yale, making the score 7-6 Rutgers, but Wojdyla scored her second goal of the game to return RU’s lead to two with seven minutes remaining in the half. Katie Sargent scored her first goal of the day for the Bulldogs, followed by Melissa Mosey’s first of three. Queener scored her third goal of the day with a minute remaining off a free-position shot and it would be the last of the first half as RU led, 9-8, as time expired.
In the second half, RU took the lead and didn’t look back. Slotman and Curiale scored early in the second half, pushing RU’s lead to three (11-8) before Yale’s Whitman notched her fourth goal of the day at the 15:37 mark. Wojdyla picked up the hat trick when Slotman fed her the ball for her third goal of the day. Yale’s Sargent scored on a free-position shot, followed by a free-position by Melissa Mosey, making the score 13-10 in favor of the Knights. Whitman notched her fifth and final goal of the day with 9:21 remaining, while RU added two more goals, sophomore Lisa Savage’s (Cortlandt Manor, NY) first and Melissa Mosey’s third. With under a minute remaining, Yale scored the final goal of the game when Sarah Driscoll fed the ball to Clarke, but RU ended with the win, 15-12.
Sophomore goalie Lyndsey Feldman (Ft. Myers, FL) made a career-high 18 saves in cage for the Knights. Sophomore Alexis Hiering (Toms River, NJ) helped out on defense for RU, collecting five ground balls. Yale goalie Amanda Laws made six saves and had four ground balls.
RU continues its homestand, hosting BIG EAST-rival Connecticut (5-4, 0-2 BIG EAST) on Saturday, April 12, at 4 p.m.
