PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The No. 17 Rutgers women's lacrosse team fell to in-state rival Princeton, 19-10, on Wednesday night at the RU Stadium Complex.
Sophomore Katie Batiuk (Jackson, N.J.) scored four goals, including connecting on a free position attempt. Freshman Brooke Cantwell (Moorestown, N.J.) added three goals, two of them free position scores, while sophomore Nina Frankowski (Maplewood, N.J.) put two in the back of the net for the Scarlet Knights (3-1).
Princeton (2-0) was led by Katie Lewis-Lamonica's six goals and Kathleen Miller added five..
The Tigers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game, including four from Lewis-Lamonica. Poole then scored on a free position shot at the 23:04 mark to put the Scarlet Knights on the board.
Princeton took a 9-1 lead with 15:20 left in the first half on an unassisted goal by Mary Minshall. Cantwell then broke a 14-minute scoring drought for the Scarlet Knights on a free position shot with 8:58 on the clock.
With a 12-2 lead heading into the second half, Princeton scored just 20 seconds in to own an 11-goal advantage. At the 24:54 mark, Batiuk scored an unassisted goal to cut the lead to 12-3. Following three more goals from the Tigers, Rutgers rattled off four-straight, two from Batiuk and one each from Cantwell and Frankowski.
Rutgers would pull to as close as 16-8 with Frankowski's free position score at the 7:15 mark, but Princeton put three more goals on the board to maintain control of the game.
Frankowski chipped in another goal with 5:55 to play and Cantwell scored RU's last score on a free position show with 1:55 on the clock.
The Scarlet Knights will play their fourth-straight home contest on Sunday, March 11, when they host Loyola (Md.) at 1:00 p.m. at the RU Stadium Complex.
