Piscataway, N.J. – No. 19 Rutgers got four goals and an assist from sophomore Michelle Poole, three scores from Nina Frankoski and four others had two goals apiece en route to a 15-12 win on Saturday afternoon at RU Turf Field.
Rutgers moved to 3-0 on the year, its best season start since 1990 (4-0). Katie Batiuk, Mary Cryan, Katy Lawrence and Brooke Canwell each scored two goals for the Scarlet Knights. Sophomore goalkeeper Sandra Abel recorded 10 saves.
The teams traded goals to begin the game but Rutgers broke open the tie, scoring two – Poole's second tally and a Lawrence score – to push ahead, 3-1. The Blue Hens recorded two answered goals to pull even again, tying the contest at 3-3 on a goal by Debbie Sloan half-way through the first period.
Rutgers reeled off the next three, the first two in a minute span. Poole earned her hat trick off an assist from Mallory Tornetta. Cryan then converted a free position for a 5-3 edge and Cantwell put the ball between the pipes for a 6-3 lead.
The Blue Hens would not go away, pulling to one (6-5) before RU scored the last two goals of the period for a 8-5 halftime lead.
The teams traded goals – yet again – over the first 15 minutes of the second period. Each squad scored four goals as Delaware closed to three (12-9) with 15:32 to play.
RU scored three straight goals from that point to grab a 15-9 lead following Poole's fourth score with 7:53 remaining.
Delaware attempted a come-back, registering the game's final three points on the board but it was not enough.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Wednesday, March 7 hosting Princeton at 7:00 p.m.
