  • PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Rutgers women’s lacrosse team surged out to an early five-goal lead and never looked back en route to a 12-5 victory over St. Joseph’s University Friday night at Finnesey Field. With the win, the Scarlet Knights, under the direction of first-year head coach Laura Brand, win their fourth straight game, improving to 4-1 overall for the season.

Senior Claire Grooms (Camillus, NY) led the RU offensive attack, scoring two of her four goals in the first half. The Scarlet Knights tallied the game’s first five scores, while shutting out the Hawks in the first 30 minutes of action to take a 5-0 lead at the break. Junior Maggie Bopp (Lindenhurst, NY) scored two of the game’s first three goals for her eighth and ninth points of the season.

The Hawks opened the second half with a goal by Meghan Cheverie to pull within four (5-1). Rutgers rebounded with the game’s next two goals to open the lead to six (7-1). Junior Cali Wojdyla (Liverpool, NY) recorded her seventh goal of the season at the 19:56 mark of the second period, while senior Jess Apel (Bridgewater, NJ) notched her third of the season two minutes later.

The next five minutes saw Saint Joseph’s score two more goals, while Rutgers added one as senior Melissa Mosey (Skaneateles, NY) hit the back of the net at the 13:12 mark of the second frame.

After another Saint Joseph’s goal, Rutgers tallied four straight goals to pull out to a 12-3 lead, putting the game out of reach for the Hawks. Senior Kate Slotman (Moorestown, NJ) opened up the scoring at the 12:13 mark off a pass from sophomore Lindsay Rising (Malvern, PA). In a one-minute span, Mosey scored her second goal of the game and Grooms added her final two points of the match.

A power outage with about seven minutes remaining in the second half finally shut the Scarlet Knights’ offense down and threatened to end the game early. However, after a brief delay, power was restored and the game continued with St. Joseph’s scoring the final two goals to pull within the final 12-5 margin.
Sophomore Lindsey Feldman (Ft. Myers, FL) made five saves in goal for Rutgers, while freshman Jaclyn Greenbaum (Ellicott City, MD) relieved Feldman with 1:05 remaining, recording one save. Their counterpart, Courtney Huff, notched 11 saves for St. Joseph’s.

Rutgers returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Poughkeepsie, NY. to face Marist at 7 p.m.
