  • WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Rutgers women’s lacrosse team extended its win streak to three with a 15-5 victory at Monmouth University (1-2) Wednesday afternoon. With the win, Rutgers moves to 3-1 on the season.

Monmouth got on the board first as Laura Levins opened the scoring with an unassisted goal. Senior Melissa Mosey (Skaneateles, NY) put the teams back on even ground with her own unassisted goal two minutes into the game. Levins used a free-position shot to give the Hawks their final lead of the day, but RU’s Cali Wojdyla (Liverpool, NY) tied the score, 2-2, with an assist from Claire Grooms (Camillus, NY). The Scarlet Knights took the lead on a goal by Cristina Curiale (Summit, NJ), followed by Wojdyla’s second goal off a pass from Curiale. Colleen Murphy brought the Hawks within one goal of the Knights (4-3), but junior Maggie Bopp (Lindenhurst, NY) scored the last goal of the half, giving the Scarlet Knights a 5-3 lead at the half.

Rutgers carried the momentum into the second half, outscoring the Hawks 10-2 in the second stanza. Sophomore Lisa Savage (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and senior Kate Slotman (Moorestown, NJ) each scored to extend RU’s lead to four (7-3) before Monmouth’s Kaitlyn Robinson scored on a free-position shot. During a five-goal run for the Knights, Slotman, Savage, Mosey and Grooms each scored their second goal of the game, while sophomore Alexis Hiering (Toms River, NJ) contributed her only goal of the day to boost the Scarlet Knight lead to eight (12-4). Levins scored Monmouth’s final goal of the game with 13:54 to play, but RU wasn’t finished. Wojdyla picked up her first hat-trick of the season, scoring her third goal of the game unassisted. Sophomore Lindsay Rising (Malvern, PA) scored her first goal of the season after missing the first four games with mono. Freshman Kathleen Holley (Pottstown, PA) made her first collegiate tally to end the game, 15-5, in favor of the Knights.

In goal for Rutgers, sophomore Lyndsey Feldman (Ft. Myers, FL) made six saves, facing 16 shots by the Hawks. Emily Brugger made nine saves in goal for the Hawks on 31 RU shots.

Rutgers will continue on its three-game road trip, next heading to Philadelphia, PA, to face Saint Joseph’s Friday, March 21, at 5 p.m. The Knights will venture to Marist College on Wednesday, March 26, before hosting BIG EAST leader, Georgetown, on Sunday, March 30.
