PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers women’s lacrosse player
Maggie Bopp (Lyndhurst, NY) has been named the BIG EAST’s Defensive Player
of the Week, announced the league office.
Bopp, a junior attacker, led the Scarlet Knights with five ground balls, one draw control and a caused turnover against No. 6 Cornell Saturday, March 8. Bopp also contributed a goal and an assist during the match and is now tied for second on the team in scoring with two points. Last season, Bopp was third on the team for goals scored, contributing 18. She also added 15 ground balls, 14 draw controls and 10 caused turnovers.
The weekly conference honor is Bopp’s first and the team’s first of the season. She becomes only the third RU women’s lacrosse player to receive the BIG EAST’s weekly award. Last season, goalie Lauren Gulotta (1999-2002) won the award twice and once in 2001, while current teammate, senior Kristin Checksfield (Collingswood, NJ), was the first RU player to earn the award in 2001.
The Scarlet Knights will play their first home match of the season on Tuesday, March 11, at 3:30 p.m., when RU faces the Fighting Blue Hens of Delaware on the Rutgers Stadium Complex turf fields.
