  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers University junior midfielder Katie Batiuk (Jackson, NJ) was named to the IWLCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region First Team, the committee announced Wednesday evening. Joining Batiuk was freshman midfielder Katy Lawrence (Pylesville, MD), who was named to the Second Team.

Batiuk was a unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team selection last week, marking the third straight year the junior was honored with a BIG EAST Conference postseason award. Lawrence joined Scarlet Knights junior defender Anne Marchitello (Medford Lakes, NJ) on the BIG EAST Second Team.

Batiuk finished the season as the team leader in goals (39), assists (23), caused-turnovers (23), draw-controls (35) and third on the team in groundballs (29) as a junior. It is the third straight year that Batiuk was honored as an IWLCA All-American. She averaged nearly four points per game (3.88) and scored in all but one of RU’s contests. Batiuk made a major run up many of RU’s all-time statistical leader boards. After her efforts in 2006, she is now fourth on the all-time Rutgers assists list with 50. She stands alone in fifth place on the all-time points list with 168 and her 91 career draw-controls tie her for third place all-time with Pearl Park ’99.

Lawrence earned the second postseason honor of her freshman year. She played in 15 games for RU and started 14 of them, as she served as a vital scoring option behind Batiuk and sophomore Kate Shomo (Medford Lakes, NJ). Lawrence was named to the BIG EAST’s Weekly Honor Roll on March 7 after she led RU to a pair of impressive road victories -- at then No. 16 Hofstra and at Delaware. In those two games, the freshman tallied three goals, three assists and four draw-controls to lead the Scarlet Knight attack. She scored a point in all but one of the games she played in this season and her 19 goals over the team’s final nine games were second only to Batiuk. Altogether, Lawrence closed out her freshman campaign with 35 points on 24 goals and 11 assists. She also collected 11 groundballs, 28 draw-controls and caused three turnovers while tallying one game-winning goal.

Rutgers head coach Laura Brand put together a competitive schedule that featured tilts against some of the nation’s best, including games against non-conference top-25 teams in: No. 10 Cornell, No. 1 Northwestern and No. 16 Hofstra. The BIG EAST Conference also featured four top-15 teams in No. 4 Georgetown, No. 7 Notre Dame, No. 12 Loyola and No. 14 Syracuse. While the team finished 7-9 (1-4 BIG EAST), it can look ahead to the 2007 campaign with much anticipation. The team’s core features proven veterans such as Batiuk, Shomo and Marchitello and the emergence of RU’s freshman class this season gives much hope for the future.
