PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers University women’s lacrosse program received commitments from two Maryland natives, head coach Laura Brand has announced. Maggie Pierce (Severn, MD) and Karie McGuire (Monrovia, MD) will join six other student-athletes who officially committed to Rutgers during the early signing period in December.
Pierce, a 5-7 midfielder/defender, comes to RU by way of the Severn School in Maryland where she led the Admirals to an IAAMA Conference second-place finish during both her junior and senior seasons. In addition to her interscholastic athletic accomplishments, Pierce was a member of the Johns Hopkins/Loyola Elite 300 All-Star Team in 2004 and she was the Most Valuable Player at the Elite Lacrosse Camp in 2005.
McGuire joins a young Scarlet Knight corps out of Urbana High School where she was teammates with current RU goalie Sandra Abel (Monrovia, MD). A 5-3 defender, McGuire led her team in caused turnovers and groundballs in 2006 and was a Frederick County first-team selection and an MVAL division first-team choice in both 2005 and 2006. During her time at Urbana, McGuire’s teams rolled to MVAL division titles in 2003, 2004 and 2005 and won the regional championship during the same years. In 2005, McGuire’s team was a state finalist, losing to Mount Hebron, the nation’s top-ranked team.
Pierce and McGuire join six other Scarlet Knights signees as members of the incoming freshman class. Rounding out the group are Mary Cryan (Newtown Square, PA), Erika Page (Moorestown, NJ), Emily Penn (Medford, NJ), Jessica Davis (Moorestown, NJ), Meghan Flanagan (Medford, NJ) and Brooke Cantwell (Moorestown, NJ). Cantwell, Davis and Page all started on a Moorestown team that was ranked third in the nation by Lacrosse Magazine and fourth by Laxpower.com. Penn and Flanagan captained a Shawnee team that was ranked second in New Jersey and 13th nationally by Laxpower.com.
