  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers University women’s lacrosse team closed out its 2006 season on Saturday with a 16-10 loss on Senior Day to the 10th-ranked Cornell at Yurcak Field.

The Big Red showed why it is one of the nation’s top teams often on Saturday, scoring eight of the games first 11 goals against the Scarlet Knights. Cornell’s Courtney Farrell scored three of her game-high five goals in the first half to pace the Big Red attack.

While the Scarlet Knights displayed a balanced scoring attack by getting goals from three of their top five scorers in the first half, sophomore Kate Shomo (Medford Lakes, NJ), freshman Katy Lawrence (Pylesville, MD), freshman Nina Frankoski (Maplewood, NJ), they were unable to control Cornell’s potent attack. Rutgers went into the halftime trailing 10-6.

Rutgers junior midfielder Katie Batiuk (Jackson, NJ) scored both of her goals after the halftime; however, Cornell attacker Lindsey Moore’s goal at 29:34 was the Big Red’s 11th of the game, and proved to be the game-winner in a 16-10 contest.

Trailing by as many as five in the second half, RU battled and cut the Big Red lead to three goals after Batiuk took a pass from Frankoski at 21:34 and put it past Cornell goalie Maggie Fava to make it a 11-8 game. However, Fava stopped three second half shots and her teammates scored five of the games final seven goals to secure the victory.

A combination of Rutgers goalies, freshmen Katherine Parker (Sykesville, MD) and Sandra Abel (Monrovia, MD), faced 31 Cornell shots and made four saves and three saves, respectively.

With the loss, the Scarlet Knights closed out their 2006 season with a 7-9 record. RU had won seven of its last 10 Senior Day games before falling to Cornell on Saturday.

The win improved the 10th-ranked Big Red to 12-3 as it awaits word on postseason play after earning a share of the Ivy League title last week.
