  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - Behind six points by junior midfielder Katie Batiuk (Jackson, NJ) and five points by sophomore attacker Kate Shomo (Medford Lakes, NJ), the Rutgers University women’s lacrosse team defeated Manhattan, 13-7, Wednesday evening at the RU Stadium Complex.

The Scarlet Knights jumped out to the early lead over the Jaspers with a goal by freshman Mallory Tornetta (Kimberton, PA) at the 28:45 mark, and three more goals would make it a 4-0 Rutgers advantage with just six minutes off the clock.

Manhattan responded with three unanswered goals, all by Brenna Tinari, to bring the Jaspers within one goal at 4-3. However, RU applied the pressure and a Shomo goal at 10:47 and then a goal by junior midfielder Sarah Soden (Monroe Twp., NJ) would give Rutgers 6-4 lead heading into the halftime.

The play of Batiuk and freshman Nina Frankoski (Maplewood, NJ) elevated RU to outscore the Jaspers 7-3 in the second frame and pull away with the 13-7 win. Batiuk tallied four of her six points in the second half on three goals and an assist, while Frankoski registered both of her goals in the second, including a mid-air redirection off of a pass from Batiuk at the 14:05 mark.

While RU managed to come away with the 13-7 victory, the goalie play of Manhattan’s Ashley Devins kept the Jaspers in the game. The Scarlet Knights out-shot Manhattan 43-19 on the night, forcing Devins to make multiple point-blank saves.

Batiuk displayed an all-around game that earned her the 2005 BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year award, as she collected three groundballs, won five draw controls and fired 10 shots. The junior is currently tops on the Scarlet Knights with 15 points on 11 goals and four assists and her goal at the 19:44 mark of the second half against the Jaspers proved to be the eventual game-winner, Batiuk’s second of the season.

Rutgers’ freshman goalie Sandra Abel (Monrovia, MD) was impressive, stopping seven shots on the way to her third win of the season. She currently leads the BIG EAST in saves per game with over 11.

With the win, the Scarlet Knights improved to 3-2 on the season. RU is also 0-1 in BIG EAST Conference play.

The loss dropped the Jaspers to 1-3 for the year.
