PISCATAWAY, NJ – After tallying three goals and three assists in wins over No. 16 Hofstra and at Delaware, Rutgers University freshman midfielder Kathryn Lawrence (Pylesville, MD) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Women’s Lacrosse Honor Roll, the league announced Monday evening.
Lawrence was held scoreless in RU’s first game against No. 1 Northwestern, but the midfielder and her freshman classmates stormed into Hofstra and Delaware and were keys to victory for the Scarlet Knights.
At Hofstra, Lawrence assisted on senior midfielder Kathleen Holley’s (Pennington, NJ) goal in the first half and scored one of her own at the 13:30 mark, giving RU the 5-4 advantage at that point. RU pulled away with a 9-7 victory for its first win of the season against a tough Hofstra team.
On Saturday at Delaware, Lawrence had the most impressive game of her young intercollegiate career. She assisted on freshman Mallory Tornetta’s (Kimberton, PA) goal at the 10:52 mark of the first half; however, the freshman was just getting started.
Lawrence scored a go-ahead goal off of a free-position attempt early in the second half to give RU a 6-5 lead and with Rutgers down by an 8-7 count with just over three minutes remaining, the freshman struck again with an equalizing goal. With time winding down, Lawrence fed fellow freshman Nina Frankoski (Maplewood, NJ) with a crisp pass that Frankoski was able to put past Delaware goalie Jessica Cerveny for the first game-winning goal of her career.
Altogether, Lawrence is second on the Scarlet Knights with six points and her three assists are good for tops on the team. She trails junior midfielder Katie Batiuk (Jackson, NJ) by just one point.
RU (2-1) will travel to Baltimore, MD, for a Sunday BIG EAST match-up with the No. 14 ranked Greyhounds of Loyola (2-1). Start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
