PISCATAWAY, NJ Rutgers freshman goalie Sandra Abel (Monrovia, MD) was named the WomensLacrosse.com Division I Rookie of the Week on Monday after registering 23 saves in Scarlet Knight wins over No. 16 Hofstra and Delaware last week.
Abel was sharp in both victories, but was particularly on her game for the second halves of both contests. On Wednesday against the Pride, Abel allowed five first half goals; however, in the second half, the freshman allowed just two Hofstra goals on 12 shots to guide RU to the 9-7 win.
Saturday was much of the same for Abel, who along with her freshmen classmates, led the way in the 9-8 Rutgers victory over Delaware. The Scarlet Knights went into the second half down by a 5-4 count but the steady net-minding of Abel allowed RU to recover, take the lead, and maintain it.
RU scored five second half goals, compared to just three by Delaware and it was able to sneak by with a 9-8 victory. On the day, Abel collected seven saves and picked up a groundball in the Rutgers win.
Rutgers (2-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) heads to Baltimore, MD to take on the No. 14 Greyhounds of Loyola College on Sunday, March 12 at 1:00 p.m. The contest marks the first BIG EAST Conference game for the Scarlet Knights on the 2006 season.
