PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers University women’s lacrosse team will host the 2005 Rutgers Lacrosse/ Nancy Gelman Tournament for Breast Cancer on Oct. 22.
In addition to Rutgers, the five team tournament will include Vermont, Albany, Columbia and Pennsylvania. Each team will play four times throughout the day and new games will begin every 40 minutes beginning at 9:30 a.m. One of the fundraising efforts includes a $5 donation for each team goal scored during play.
Donations will be accepted in lieu of an admission fee ($5 minimum) and there will be a pre-tournament pledge drive. In addition, pink T-shirts emblazoned with the words “Rutgers Lacrosse” and “Nancy R. Gelman Foundation” will be on sale.
The Nancy R. Gelman foundation is a non-profit corporation dedicated to improving outcomes for patients with breast cancer. The foundation was established in 2001 by Nancy R. Gelman’s family shortly after her passing and it honors her memory by supporting and promoting breast cancer awareness and research. Nancy R. Gelman’s late husband Jon is a Rutgers University alumnus and works closely with a research fund set up through the University.
“The Nancy R. Gelman Foundation raises much needed funds towards Breast Cancer Research,” Rutgers head coach Laura Brand said. “This tournament allows Rutgers Women’s Lacrosse to do its part for a cause that affects millions of women, including those who are dear to us.”
This year’s event marks the inception of the Rutgers Lacrosse/Nancy R. Gelman Tournament for Breast Cancer and it will close out the fall portion of the women’s lacrosse schedule.
