  • PHILADELPHIA, PA – Junior Kathleen Holley (Pottstown, PA) and freshman Shirah Hamor (Pennington, NJ) each netted a pair of goals to lead the Rutgers women’s lacrosse team to a 7-5 victory at Saint Joseph’s on Tuesday, wrapping up a stretch of three games in five days for RU. With the win, the Scarlet Knights improve to 6-8 on the season and move to 9-0 all-time against the Hawks. SJU falls to 5-8 with the loss.

Rutgers opened up a 1-0 lead on the Hawks after freshman Courtney Wernick (Baltimore, MD) connected on her third goal of the season off a pass from Holley nearly eight minutes into the contest.

Sophomore Jamie Farewell (Medford Lakes, NJ) followed an SJU goal with a free-position goal with 10 minutes remaining in the first half and Holley scored her first goal of the afternoon off a feed from freshman Rachel Bruce (Arnold, MD) with 3:50 left in the opening period to give the Scarlet Knights a 3-1 advantage.

Lindsay Brown of Saint Joseph’s scored with four seconds left in the first half to pull the Hawks within a goal at the half.

SJU opened the second half with two goals to take its first lead of the contest at 4-3 with 20 minutes to play.

Rutgers countered with a three-goal run in span of 2:31 to recapture the lead for good. Sophomore Katie Batiuk (Jackson, NJ) scored her 44th goal of the season off a Bruce pass to knot the game at 4-4 and Holley scored her second goal 35 seconds later off a feed from freshman Kate Shomo (Medford Lakes, NJ) to give RU a lead it would not relinquish. Bruce registered her third assist of the game, setting up Hamor for the first of her two goals to give the Scarlet Knights a two-goal cushion with 17:01 to play.

The Hawks pulled within a goal with 13:22 remaining but the Rutgers defense would not allow another Hawks score the remainder of the contest.

Hamor added an insurance goal with 32 seconds left to give Rutgers the 7-5 victory.

Rutgers outshot SJU, 23-17, while the Hawks held a 34-28 advantage in ground balls.

Senior goalie Lyndsey Feldman (Ft. Myers, FL) had six goals for the Scarlet Knights, while her counterpart, Courtney Huff of Saint Joseph’s, made seven stops.

Rutgers returns to action for its final road match of the season against Cornell on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Ithaca, NY.
