  • SOUTH BEND, IN – The Rutgers women’s lacrosse team ended its two-game Midwest road swing with a 12-9 loss to Notre Dame on Sunday at Moose Krause Field in South Bend, IN. The Scarlet Knights fall to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the BIG EAST, while Notre Dame also moves to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Sophomore Katie Baiuk (Jackson, NJ) paced Rutgers with a game-high four goals, marking the fourth time in the past six games she has registered four scores in a game. She has scored multiple goals in six of Rutgers’ nine games. Batiuk also recorded a pair of assists on the afternoon. Batiuk now has a team-best 25 goals and eight assists on the season for RU.

Junior Emily Widrick (Carthage, NY), sophomores Anne Marchitello (Medford Lakes, NJ), Jamie Farewell (Medford Lakes, NJ) and Sarah Soden (Monroe, NJ) and freshman Kate Shomo (Medford Lakes, NJ) each had single goals for the Scarlet Knights. Senior Lindsay Rising (Malvern, PA) registered an assist.

Batiuk and Widrick staked the Scarlet Knights out to a 2-0 lead with goals in the first 2:05 of the game. Batiuk opened the scoring with an unassisted score, then fed Widrick for her 12th goal of the year 36 seconds later.

Notre Dame’s Lena Zentgraf put the Irish on the board with an unassisted goal nearly four minutes into the contest, but Rutgers responded 37 seconds later as Batiuk found Shomo near the net for the freshman’s 12th goal of the year.

The Irish used a four-goal run to take a 5-3 lead. Zentgraf scored two more goals and Crysti Foote and Jackie Bowers each had single scores during the spurt.

Rising set up Batiuk for her second goal of the afternoon to end the ND run with 9:50 remaining in the first half. Notre Dame tacked on two more goals in the final two minutes of the first half as Foote and Caitlin McKinney had goals to give the Irish a 7-4 halftime advantage.

Notre Dame built a 10-4 lead with three goals to open the second half. Marchitello ended the Irish run with her seventh goal of the season for RU with 7:28 to play. Marchitello also displayed her defensive prowess with a game-high six ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Brittany Fox scored consecutive goals for ND to give the Irish a 12-5 lead with 6:10 remaining in the contest.

The Scarlet Knights staged a furious comeback attempt with the game’s final four goals, but time ran out and Notre Dame held off RU to earn the 12-9 victory. Soden and Farewell scored within 14 seconds of each other and Batiuk ended the game with two goals in the final two minutes of the contest.

Notre Dame edged Rutgers in shots, 29-25, while holding a 27-21 advantage in ground balls.

Senior goalie Lyndsey Feldman (Ft. Myers, FL) made nine saves for RU, while her counterpart, Carol Dixon of Notre Dame, made nine stops for the Irish. Feldman’s nine saves on Sunday move her into sole possession of fifth place on the RU all-time saves list with 428 career stops. She entered the game tied with Karyl Whitman (1991-1993) with 419 saves.

Senior defender Catherine Seals (Long Valley, NJ) had one caused turnover on Sunday, giving her 74 for her career. She is one shy of Elizabeth Chambers (1997-2000) for fourth place on the school’s all-time list.

The Scarlet Knights return home to host Villanova on Wednesday, April 6, at Yurcak Field at 7 p.m. in the first of two home contests for RU.
