  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – On a rain-slicked Rutgers Stadium Complex turf, the Rutgers women’s lacrosse team dropped a 9-8 decision to Old Dominion Monday afternoon. The Scarlet Knights move to 3-4 on the season, while the Lady Monarchs improve to 3-3.

Heavy rain and swirling winds made playing conditions unfavorable. The weather resulted in the malfunction of the scoreboard at the field in the first half, which was out of service for the remainder of the game. Monday’s game is less than a week after last Wednesday’s 18-1 victory over Bucknell at the Rutgers Stadium Complex under a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow.

As the have done in several games this season, the Scarlet Knights jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a score in the first minute of the contest. Freshman Kate Shomo (Medford Lakes, NJ) took a pass from junior Kathleen Holley (Pottstown, PA) and blasted home a goal 41 seconds into the game.

Old Dominion countered with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 advantage as Ashley Stanwick and Colleen Carver scored for the Lady Monarchs.

The Scarlet Knights then responded with a four-goal run to build a 5-2 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. The former Shawnee duo of sophomore Anne Marchitello (Medford Lakes, NJ) and Shomo connected on goal to begin the spurt, with Marchitello the beneficiary of the score. Senior Lindsay Rising (Malvern, PA) followed with an unassisted goal and freshmen Rachel Bruce (Arnold, MD) and Shirah Hamor (Pennington, NJ) closed out the run with single goals. Junior Emily Widrick (Carthage, NY) assisted Bruce’s goal, while Hamor’s was unassisted. For Hamor, it was her first collegiate score.

Caroline Jacobs pulled the Lady Monarchs within one goal with a pair of scores with less than six minutes remaining before halftime, scoring the latter with 44 seconds remaining before the break.

The Scarlet Knights opened the lead to two goals just five seconds later as Rising put home an unassisted score with 39 seconds left on the clock, giving Rutgers a 6-4 halftime advantage.

Old Dominion scored the first four goals of the second half to take an 8-6 lead midway through the final period. Katie Veneziale, Sarah Lautenbach, Stanwick and Jacobs each scored for the Lady Monarchs.

The Rutgers defense held ODU scoreless for a span of 15:45 of the second half, while sophomore Katie Batiuk (Jackson, NJ) pulled RU within one goal with an unassisted score at the 10:50 mark of the final half.

Jacobs ended ODU’s scoreless drought with an unassisted goal with 2:13 remaining in the game, putting ODU up, 9-7.

Widrick pulled RU back within a goal at 9-8 with an unassisted score with 1:05 remaining. The Scarlet Knights were in aggressive pursuit of the tying score but were unable to regain control from ODU, which escaped with a one-goal victory against Rutgers for the second year in a row. Last season, the Lady Monarchs also posted a 9-8 victory against the Scarlet Knights at Yurcak Field.

Rutgers outshot Old Dominion, 24-17, while holding a 14-9 advantage in ground balls.

Senior goalie Lyndsey Feldman (Ft. Myers, FL) had four saves for Rutgers, while Michelle Gannon and Sara Larson split time in goal for Old Dominion. Gannon allowed five goals without a save, while Larson allowed three goals, registering five saves.

Rutgers will play its first two true road matches of the season this weekend, traveling to the Midwest to face top-ranked Northwestern on Friday, April 1, at 4 p.m. and Notre Dame on Sunday, April 3, at noon. The Scarlet Knights have played one game away from Piscataway, defeating No. 18 Yale, 10-7, on neutral ground at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, FL. RU’s first true road game was scheduled for March 8 at Penn, but was postponed due to inclement weather.
