  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – A furious second-half comeback fell just short for Rutgers in an 8-6 loss to No. 11 Hofstra on Saturday in the 2005 women’s lacrosse season opener at the Rutgers Stadium Complex.

Facing a 4-1 halftime deficit, the Scarlet Knights (0-1) scored five goals in the second period, cutting the Hofstra lead to one goal on two separate occasions, but the Pride (1-0) held off a surging RU squad in the final minute and sealed it with an insurance score with one second left to take the victory.

Hofstra jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage as the Pride’s Becky Thorn scored off a Kim Hillier pass 10 minutes into the match. Hillier added her first of two goals on the afternoon a minute later, scoring a free-position goal.

Sophomore Katie Batiuk (Jackson, NJ) got the Scarlet Knights on the board at the 18:18 mark of the first half with a free-position goal. Batiuk, who led the team in seven offensive categories as a freshman last season and was the lone freshman representative in the BIG EAST to earn league postseason honors, continued her offensive dominance of a year ago, registering three goals and an assist on the afternoon.

Hofstra ended nearly 10 minutes of scoreless action after Batiuk’s goal, scoring the final two goals of the first half. Hofstra’s Caitlin Connolly scored off a pass from Casey McGrath at the 8:45 mark of the opening half. McGrath then scored off a Hillier assist with 4:36 to play in the first period as the Pride headed into the halftime break with a 4-1 lead.

Rutgers and Hofstra traded goals to open the second half with Batiuk scoring an unassisted goal less than three minutes into the half. Hofstra’s Catherine Guerriere answered with a goal off a McGrath assist less than three minutes later to make it 5-2.

Consecutive goals by junior Emily Widrick (Carthage, NY) brought Rutgers within a goal at 5-4 with 18 minutes remaining in the contest. The Pride, however, answered again as Jill Wienecke scored a free-position goal and Hillier added her second score of the contest.

Rutgers surged right back with consecutive goals to cut the Hofstra lead to one at 7-6 with 39 seconds remaining. Batiuk registered her third goal of the afternoon with 4:58 left to play, then assisted on freshman Kate Shomo’s (Medford Lakes, NJ) first collegiate goal with 39 seconds remaining.

Hofstra gained control on the ensuing draw and was able to hold possession against a hard-charging RU defense, scoring an open goal with one second to play.

The Pride outshot Rutgers, 25-22, while holding an 18-16 edge in ground balls.

Senior goalie Lyndsey Feldman (Ft. Myer’s FL), the preseason BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, made 13 saves for Rutgers. Hofstra’s Maisie Osteen and Lisa Papa split time in goal combining for nine saves for the Pride. Osteen made four saves, allowing one goal, while Papa made five stops, surrendering five goals.

Rutgers returns to action next Saturday, March 5, hosting the University of Delaware at the Rutgers Stadium Complex at 1 p.m.
