  • NEW HAVEN, CT – For the third time this season, the Rutgers women’s lacrosse team (4-6) found itself on the losing end of a game decided by two goals or less, dropping a 10-8 decision to 14th-ranked Yale on Wednesday afternoon in New Haven, CT.

Rutgers came within a goal of defeating Northwestern before falling to the Wildcats, 14-13, in the season opener on Feb. 28. Cornell also survived for an 8-6 victory against the Scarlet Knights on March 14. Like Yale, both Cornell and Northwestern have been nationally ranked in several weekly polls during the season.

The Scarlet Knights jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the first 3:22 of the contest. Junior attacker Lindsay Rising (Malvern, PA) scored the game’s first tally off a feed from sophomore Emily Widrick (Carthage, NY) 1:27 into the game. Senior Cali Wojdyla (Liverpool, NY) set freshman midfielder Jamie Farewell (Medford Lakes, NJ) up for the game’s second score to put RU up by two early.

Yale’s Miles Whitman rallied the Bulldogs with consecutive unassisted goals to knot the game at 2-2 in the first five minutes of play.

Freshman midfielder Katie Batiuk (Jackson, NJ) converted a free position shot for the first of her two scores on the afternoon to once again give Rutgers the advantage at 3-2.

Yale took control for good with five consecutive goals, including two more by Miles, to open an insurmountable 7-3 lead on the Scarlet Knights. Freshman midfielder Sarah Soden (Monroe Township, NJ) ended the Yale run with her first collegiate goal at the 1:15 mark of the first half, to make it 7-4 at the halftime break.

Yale scored two of the first three goals of the second half as Miles scored her fifth and sixth goals of the game, while Batiuk added her second free-position goal of the contest for RU, making the score 9-5 in favor of the Bulldogs with a little more than 23 minutes remaining in the game.

Rutgers, however, refused to give up, registering a pair of goals to pull within two at 9-7. Junior attacker Lisa Savage (Cortlandt Manor, NY) scored an unassisted goal at the 21:35 mark, while fellow junior Alexis Hiering (Toms River, NJ) converted a free-position goal just 1:21 seconds later to give RU new life with a little more than 20 minutes to play.

Yale’s Katherine Sargent put an end to more than 10 minutes of scoreless play with a free-position goal with 9:21 left in the game, giving the Bulldogs a 10-7 edge.

Wojdyla scored her 10th goal of the season with 6:35 to play, but that is all Rutgers could muster as Yale held on for the 10-8 victory.

Yale outshot Rutgers, 36-26, while holding a 15-12 edge over the Scarlet Knights in ground balls.

Rutgers goalie Lyndsey Feldman (Ft. Myers, FL) made 14 saves, while Yale’s Lonnie Sarnell had nine stops for the Bulldogs.

The Scarlet Knights continue their four-game road swing on Saturday, April 10, against Connecticut in Storrs, CT, at 1 p.m.
