  • VILLANOVA, PA – The Rutgers women’s lacrosse team snapped its three-game losing streak in emphatic fashion, scoring seven goals in the first 16 minutes of regulation en route to a convincing 14-5 victory over Villanova on Wednesday. The victory evens the Scarlet Knights’ record to 4-4 for the season.

The Scarlet Knights’ offensive onslaught began when senior Maggie Bopp (Lindenhurst, NY) scored two goals within the first six minutes of regulation. The first came courtesy of a feed from freshman Jamie Farewell (Medford Lakes, NJ) and the second was on an assist from senior co-captain Cristina Curiale (Summit, NJ). Freshman Katie Batiuk (Jackson, NJ) then picked up a pair of unassisted goals before Bopp struck again with 17:48 to go in the first half to give the Scarlet Knights a 5-0 edge. Junior Lyndsay Rising (Malvern, PA) and sophomore Emily Widrick (Carthage, NY) scored two more goals to build the 7-0 lead just 16 minutes into play.

Villanova finally got on the scoreboard with a free-position goal at the 12:24 mark of the first half, but Bopp answered with another goal with 6:47 to go in the half before Villanova freshman Becky Gardner capitalized on another free position attempt to make it an 8-2 Rutgers advantage at halftime.

Farewell opened the scoring for Rutgers in the second half to make it 9-2 in favor of the Scarlet Knights before Villanova score back-to-back goals to make the score 9-4. Any hope of a Villanova rally was squashed, though, when Rutgers scored the next three goals to build a 12-4 advantage. Batiuk, Bopp and freshman Anne Marchitello (Medford Lakes, NJ) each had a goal for Rutgers.

RU followed a Wildcat score with the final two goals of the game. Marchitello added her second of the contest off a feed from fellow freshman Amanda Cymore (Nyack, NY), who scored her first collegiate point on Wednesday night. Batiuk put home her fourth score of the night.

Bopp finished the night with a game-high five goals, while Batiuk added four goals and two assists. Senior Cali Wojdyla (Liverpool, NY) also recorded two assists for RU.

Rutgers, which has never lost to Nova, won its 15th-straight game against the Wildcats on Wednesday night.

In goal, junior Lyndsey Feldman (Ft. Myers, FL) and sophomore Jaclyn Greenbaum (Ellicott City, MD) combined to make six saves for the Scarlet Knights.

Junior Alexis Hiering (Toms River, NJ) had a strong game in the defensive third for the Scarlet Knights, registering a game-high five ground balls and four caused turnovers.

Rutgers will return home for the first time in nearly three weeks when it hosts BIG EAST foe Syracuse on Saturday, April 3, at 1:00 p.m. at Yurcak Field.
