PISCATAWAY, N.J. (July 1, 2014) – Rutgers women’s lacrosse received its 2015 Big Ten Conference home/away opponents Tuesday, as the six-team league is set to participate in its inaugural season. Four of the Scarlet Knights’ five conference opponents competed in the 2014 NCAA Championships, led by Maryland which captured the title.
Rutgers will host two Big Ten matches on the year, as the squad welcomes Penn State (Week One) and Northwestern (Week Three). The Scarlet Knights take on defending NCAA champions Maryland in Week Two for their road opener, and close out the regular season at Ohio State (Week Four) and Michigan (Week Five).
The conference announced on June 12 that Rutgers will serve as the host site for the 2015 Big Ten Women’s Lacrosse Tournament. The tournament will take place at High Point Solutions Stadium from April 30-May 3 and will include all six conference programs.
Big Ten women’s lacrosse features teams that have won 24 national championships and 20 of the 33 NCAA championships, including nine of the last 10.
Rutgers concluded the 2014 campaign with a 9-9 overall record and claimed the No. 4 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament to mark the squad’s first postseason appearance since 2008.
Leading the slew of returners for RU in 2015 is redshirt senior midfielder Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.), who was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team and the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) 2014 All-Mid Atlantic Second Team. Sbrilli was the squad’s leading scorer with 37 points on 30 goals and seven assists.
Also returning for the Scarlet Knights are redshirt junior midfielder Kristin Kocher (Medford, N.J.) and redshirt sophomore goalie Amanda Currell (Moorestown, N.J.). Kocher finished third on the team with 25 points (19 G, 6 A), while Currell recorded a team-best 112 saves in 18 games. Currell’s 6.22 saves per game and .459 save percentage both ranked third in the BIG EAST.
