PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 26, 2014) – The Rutgers women’s lacrosse team (9-8, 3-4 BIG EAST) has clinched the No. 4 seed to the 2014 BIG EAST Conference Tournament. With UConn’s win over Villanova, the Scarlet Knights claim the final spot to this year’s tournament by virtue of goal differential.
Rutgers, Temple and Villanova all concluded the regular season with a 3-4 mark in league play, however, RU’s win over Temple in the regular season finale on April 25 at High Point Solutions Stadium ensured that the Scarlet Knights finished with the best goal differential.
Louisville clinched the BIG EAST regular-season crown outright following its perfect 7-0 season, followed by Georgetown, which locked in at the No. 2 seed. UConn’s victory over the Wildcats today in Storrs, Conn., secured the No. 3 seed for the Huskies, with RU claiming the final spot.
The 2014 BIG EAST Championships will take place from May 1-3 at Georgetown University. Fans can watch the semifinal games on the BIG EAST website, while the championship match will be televised on Fox Sports 2.
Rutgers will face the No. 1 seeded Cardinals on Thursday, May 1 at 5:30 p.m. in the semifinals.
Rutgers’ berth to the 2014 BIG EAST Championships marks the Scarlet Knights’ first trip to the postseason since the 2008 campaign. RU fell to then-No. 5 and eventual champion, Syracuse, at Notre Dame Stadium in the first round of the tournament.
This season marks RU’s final year in the BIG EAST before joining the Big Ten Conference. A charter member of the BIG EAST women’s lacrosse league, the Scarlet Knights are currently in their 14th year with the conference.
