PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 25, 2014) – Rutgers women’s lacrosse redshirt junior midfielder Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.) was named to the BIG EAST Conference Weekly Honor Roll, the league announced Tuesday. Sbrilli led Rutgers to a thrilling come-from-behind, 10-9, win over Cornell Saturday afternoon in Ithaca, N.Y., netting a team-high four scores to tie her career-high. The midfielder was particularly efficient on the day, recording her four goals on seven shots.
The New Jersey native paced an RU rally that saw the Scarlet Knights trailing Cornell, 4-0, early on in the first half. Sbrilli scored two first-half goals as Rutgers entered the half-time break trailing 7-3 and sparked an offensive explosion to start the second half, netting her third score of the game and the team’s first of the frame just over a minute in. RU scored five total goals in the first seven minutes of the half, two of which were notched by Sbrilli. For the half, Rutgers limited the hosts to just two goals, while scoring seven to seal the win.
The hat trick marked Sbrilli’s second of the season and the ninth of her career. Sbrilli has now recorded 16 multi-goal games in her career, including three this season and her second in as many games. She leads RU in both points (15) and goals (13) through nine games in 2014.
The weekly accolade is the third of Sbrilli’s career and her first since being named to the conference’s weekly honor roll during the 2012 season on April 9. The midfielder was also named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week on March 5 of the 2012 campaign.
Prior to the beginning of this season, Sbrilli was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST team. Sbrilli sat out the 2013 season with a medical redshirt.
Rutgers has now had a Scarlet Knight receive a weekly award four times this season. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Amanda Currell (Moorestown, N.J.) was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week twice, and was also named to the Weekly Honor Roll on March 18.
