  • HEMPSTEAD, NY - Rutgers stormed out of the gates and never looked back en route to a 12-7 victory over Hofstra in women’s lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, NY. The win is the Scarlet Knights’ first of the season, improving the club to 1-1.

Rutgers, which played Hofstra to overtime in two of the previous three meetings, made sure to open a big early lead on the Pride. The Scarlet Knights scored the game’s first five goals in a span of 16:07 to stake the early margin.

Senior Maggie Bopp (Lindenhurst, NY) got things started for RU, scoring the game’s first goal off a Cali Wojdyla (Liverpool, NY) feed 2:49 into the contest. She added another goal during the run on a Cristina Curiale (Summit, NJ) pass, finishing with a team-high four on the afternoon. Freshman Katie Batiuk (Jackson, NJ) and junior Ashley Schauder (Jackson, NJ) also contributed a goal for RU.

Freshman Anne Marchitello (Medford Lakes, NJ) capped the run with her first collegiate goal at the 13:53 mark of the first half. She converted a Lisa Savage ( Cortlandt Manor, NY) pass, sending it to the back of the net.

Hofstra finally broke through on Rutgers goalie Lyndsey Feldman (Ft. Myers, FL) nearly 17 minutes into the contest, as the Pride’s Jill Wienecke put Hoftsra on the board. Hofstra’s Kimberly Hillier scored a pair of goals near the end of the half, while Bopp added her third of the period to give Rutgers a 6-3 lead at halftime.

Batiuk scored her second goal of the game to put Rutgers up 7-3 just over a minute into the second half with an unassisted goal, but Hofstra cut the Scarlet Knights’ lead to two (7-5) with a pair of goals in a span of 15 seconds. The Scarlet Knights and Pride traded goals during the next three minutes of play to hold the RU lead to two.

Bopp and Wojdyla would not allow the Pride to creep any closer, scoring consecutive goals to put Rutgers up 10-6 with 14 minutes left on the clock. Bopp took a feed from Lindsay Rising (Malvern, PA), slipping it past Pride goalie Lisa Papa. Wojdyla broke through 52 seconds later with her second goal of the half. Freshman Jamie Farewell (Medford Lakes, NJ) converted a free-position shot for her first collegiate goal, while Wojdyla added her third goal of the game off the Marchitello assist with 44 seconds left to secure the Rutgers victory.

Feldman had a solid first half with five of her game-high nine saves in the first 30 minutes of play. Papa had five saves for the Pride.

The Scarlet Knights will return to action, traveling to Newark, DE, to face the University of Delaware at 1 p.m.
