PISCATAWAY, N.J. (February 20, 2014) – The Rutgers University women’s lacrosse team (1-0) hosts its second-straight contest at the RU Turf Field to begin the 2014 season on Saturday, Feb. 22, as the team welcomes Fairfield (0-1) at 1 p.m. Rutgers opened the season against Manhattan on Tuesday, Feb. 18 with a 6-3 win “On the Banks."

Rutgers outshot the Jaspers by a 26-12 margin in the victory, and also had the advantage in ground balls (20-17) and draw controls (7-4). Both senior attacker Katrina Martinelli (Moorestown, N.J.) and junior midfielder Jenny Vlahos (Manhasset, N.Y.) scored two goals each to lead RU to the win.

Fairfield enters Saturday’s contest after dropping its season opener, 8-7, to Hofstra in Hempstead, N.Y. on Feb. 19. Sophomore Colleen Reynolds scored twice for Fairfield, which also received goals from five other Stags.

After trailing by as many as four goals (6-2) in the second half, the Stags managed to outscore the hosts by a 3-1 margin over the next 18 minutes to cut the deficit to two at 7-5. Fairfield continued to press on, netting a pair of goals in the final two minutes of regulation to knot the score at 7-7. A turnover by the Stags with 14 seconds remaining would prove costly, however, as it resulted in the game-winning goal by Hofstra’s Sam Lenox, her second of the game.

Rutgers leads the all-time series against the Stags with a 2-0 record. The Scarlet Knights faced Fairfield last year in Piscataway on Feb. 23 and notched a 5-3 win. Both Martinelli and sophomore attacker Halley Barnes (Garnet Valley, Pa.) recorded two goals apiece to lead Rutgers. RU’s other win against the Stags came during the 2012 season in double overtime by a score of 11-10 (March 24). Redshirt junior midfielder Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.), who at the time was a sophomore, scored the game-winner 44 seconds into the second OT period.

The Scarlet Knights’ contest against Fairfield marks the second-straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent RU will face to open the 2014 campaign. Rutgers is 22-0 all-time against current MAAC schools. The Scarlet Knights are 11-0 vs. Monmouth, 6-0 vs. Manhattan, 3-0 vs. Marist and 2-0 vs. Fairfield. Rutgers has never faced Iona, Niagara, Quinnipiac or Siena.
