  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (February 18, 2014) – Behind two goals apiece from senior attacker Katrina Martinelli (Moorestown, N.J.) and junior midfielder Jenny Vlahos (Manhasset, N.Y.), the Rutgers women’s lacrosse team (1-0) defeated Manhattan College, 6-3, Tuesday afternoon at the RU Turf Complex.

Both of Martinelli’s goals came on free position attempts, as the senior added three ground balls and a team-high four caused turnovers in the win. Vlahos was extremely efficient on the offensive end, as she took just two shots in the game and scored both times. The midfielder added a team-high four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Senior attacker Megan Clements (Pennington, N.J.) and redshirt junior midfielder Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.) also scored for the Scarlet Knights. Clements finished with an assist and a draw control as well.

The Rutgers defense, which finished the 2013 campaign ranked sixth nationally in scoring-defense, continued its strong play against the Jaspers in the new year, allowing just three goals. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Amanda Currell (Moorestown, N.J.) notched a team-high five saves, as she entered the contest in the second half and one goal. Junior Candice Dandridge (Cherry Hill, N.J.) started in the cage for RU and picked up two saves to earn her first career win.

Manhattan (0-1) was led by Kaitlyn Cunningham who scored two goals and added two caused turnovers and two ground balls.

RU opened the contest with a 2-0 advantage, as Martinelli and Vlahos scored back-to-back free position goals within sixty seconds of each other in the 19th minute of the opening half. Manhattan’s Stefanie Ranagan brought the visitors within a single score with a goal at the 15:54 mark, off the assist from teammate Donna Jo DiNorcia.

Both teams failed to score in the next ten minutes until Cunningham scored the equalizer at 5:31 on a free position shot to knot the game at 2-2. Clements regained the advantage for the hosts less than a minute later off the dish from freshman midfielder Amanda Turturro (Farmingdale, N.Y.) to send the Scarlet Knights into the half time break in front 3-2.

Rutgers added an insurance goal just over six minutes into the second half when Martinelli netted her second winner. Manhattan’s Cunningham again responded by finding the back of the net to get the Jaspers within one at 4-3, but Rutgers added two more goals by Sbrilli (12:56) on a free position attempt and Vlahos (9:51) off the helper from Clements to secure the win.

Rutgers outshot the Jaspers by a 26-12 margin, and also had the advantage in ground balls (20-17) and draw controls (7-4).

The Scarlet Knights return to action on Saturday, Feb. 22 as the team welcomes the Stags of Fairfield University “To the Banks” at 1 p.m.
