PISCATAWAY, N.J. (February 14, 2014) – The Rutgers University women’s lacrosse team opens the 2014 campaign on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. against the Jaspers of Manhattan College in Riverdale, N.Y.

Rutgers completed the 2013 season with an overall record of 9-8, after matching its best start in school history with a 7-1 nonconference record. The Scarlet Knights suffered from key injuries to starters in the second half of the season, however.

RU returns 22 letterwinners from a year ago, which includes over 80 percent of its scoring and the core of a defense that ranked sixth nationally in scoring defense. Offensively, the Scarlet Knights return their top two leading scorers in senior attacker Katrina Martinelli (Moorestown, N.J.), a 2013 All-BIG EAST Second Team selection, and senior attacker Megan Clements (Pennington, N.J.), who finished with 35 and 21 goals, respectively.

Clements was selected to the 2014 Preseason All-BIG EAST team along with redshirt junior defender Hollie DiMuro (West Babylon, N.Y.), senior defender Chelsea Intrabartola (Commack, N.Y.), and redshirt junior midfielder Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.). Rutgers was picked to finish fourth in the league by the conference’s head coaches.

Manhattan concluded the 2013 campaign with an overall record of 4-13, going just 1-5 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Highlighting the list of Jaspers’ returners is Carly Eskenazi, who was named co-captain prior to the beginning of the season. Eskenazi started all 17 games last year and tied for team-high in points with 25, while leading the squad in goals with 22. The Jaspers are led by first-year head coach Elizabeth Weber.

Rutgers leads the all-time series against the Jaspers, with a perfect 5-0 mark. Last year the teams also met in the season opener, with Rutgers coming out on top, 15-5, at the RU Turf Field. The 15 goals were a season-high for RU in 2013. Martinelli had a career-day to lead Rutgers, finishing with eight points on five goals and three assists. Seven different Scarlet Knights scored in the contest, five of whom are returning this season.

Fans can follow the action with live stats.

The Scarlet Knights welcome Fairfield University “To the Banks,” for their home opener on Saturday, Feb. 22. The contest is scheduled to take place at High Point Solutions Stadium at 1p.m.
