PISCATAWAY, N.J. (January 30, 2014) – Four Scarlet Knights were named to the 2014 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, the conference office announced Thursday. Senior attack Megan Clements (Pennington, N.J.), redshirt junior defender Hollie DiMuro (West Babylon, N.Y.), senior defender Chelsea Intrabartola (Commack, N.Y.), and redshirt junior midfielder Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.) were all selected following a vote by the league’s head coaches.
Only Georgetown had more players (six) receive the honor.
The Scarlet Knights were also picked to finish fourth in the conference. Georgetown was picked first with 49 first-place votes, followed by UConn (one first-place vote) in second, Louisville in third, Rutgers in fourth, Temple in fifth, Villanova sixth and Cincinnati and Marquette who were picked tied for seventh.
As a junior, Clements saw action in all 17 games, while starting in 15. One of Rutgers’ primary weapons on the offensive end, she finished the season second on the team in goals (21), points (29), and draw controls (30). She displayed her offensive prowess against Hofstra on March 13, when she exploded for a career-high five goals and added on assist an RU’s 13-6 win over the Pride. Clements also helped the Scarlet Knights take down No. 20 Penn by netting two free position goals on two attempts and notching three draw controls in the squad’s 6-5 victory on March 6.
An IWLCA All-Mid-Atlantic First Team Selection, DiMuro played and started in 16 games at defense to anchor a unit that ranked sixth nationally and first in the BIG EAST, allowing just 7.76 goals per game. For the season, DiMuro ranked third in the BIG EAST and 27th nationally with 40 groundballs and led the team in both ground balls and caused turnovers (25). In RU’s 13-6 win over Hofstra, she registered six groundballs, five draw controls and four caused turnovers.
One of the Scarlet Knights’ three senior captains, Intrabartola played and started in 15 games at defense before missing the final two due to injury. Also a member of the No. 6 defense in the NCAA, the New York native was named to the IWLCA All-Mid-Atlantic Second Team. For the year, Intrabartola finished with 16 groundballs, 10 caused turnovers and one draw control.
Returning for her third season of eligibility “On the Banks,” Sbrilli sat out the 2013 season because of injury, but is poised to build on a stellar sophomore campaign in 2014. In 2012, Sbrilli started in all 16 games for the Scarlet Knights, ranking second on the team with 33 goals. The midfielder was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after scoring a hat trick, including the game-winner, at No. 8 Princeton on Feb. 29, 2012. She would tie for first on the team with seven total hat tricks on the season, four of which came against league opponents.
