Piscataway, N.J. (April 13, 2013) – Rutgers women’s lacrosse earned its first BIG EAST win of the season, taking down Villanova, 9-6, Saturday afternoon at the RU Turf Field at the Stadium Complex. Six different Scarlet Knights earned at least a point, as RU moves to 9-4 and 1-3 in BIG EAST play.

Junior midfielder Katrina Martinelli (Moorestown, N.J.) paced Rutgers with two goals and an assist. Freshman Halley Barnes (Garnet Valley, Pa.) and redshirt senior Annie McGinley (Moorestown, N.J.) also posted two goals apiece. The RU defense caused 13 VU turnovers, as Jenny Vlahos (Manhasset, N.Y.) led the way with three takeaways, adding three draw controls and two ground balls.

Villanova (5-7, 0-4) was led by Jackie Froccaro with two scored.

After trading goals to start the half, the Rutgers defense held Villanova to without a goal for 16:42, while the Scarlet Knight offense posted a three-goal spurt. Junior attack Megan Clements (Pennington, N.J.)

dished off to Kim Kolodny (Farmingdale, N.Y.) for a score at the 13:41 mark. Martinelli posted a free position goal and then assisted on a McGinley tally.

Each team scored again before the break, as the Scarlet Knights took a 5-2 advantage into halftime

Rutgers scored back-to-back goals to open the second half, both off free position opportunities. Martinelli converted the first and Barnes gave RU its largest lead of the game, 7-2, with 27:32 to play.

Villanova cut the lead to three after two-straight goals, but Clements quieted the run with an unassisted goal at the 22-minute mark. Villanova’s Froccaro posted a score just over four minutes later to pull the Wildcats within three, 8-5.

McGinley registered an unassisted tally with just over five minutes to play to push the ledger to 9-5 and the Scarlet Knights were able to ride out the win.

Rutgers wraps up its home slate next weekend against Georgetown and Loyola. RU and GU square off on Friday, April 19 at 3 p.m. on the RU Turf Field.
