Piscataway, N.J. (March 21, 2013) – Off to its best start in program history, the Rutgers women’s lacrosse team hits the road to start BIG EAST play at No. 7 Notre Dame and Marquette this weekend. RU and UND will face off Friday, March 22 at 7 p.m., while the Scarlet Knights and Golden Eagles take the field on Sunday, March 24 at 12 noon.
The 7-1 start for RU matches a program record set in 1990. Weather permitting, the game vs. the Irish will be streamed live here: http://hqplayer.nbcsports.com/Player.html?PID=117. Live stats will be available for both games via the teams’ websites.
RU won its sixth-straight contest Tuesday, defeating in-state rival Princeton, 12-10. Rutgers, receiving votes in the latest IWLCA Poll, saw contributions from seven different Scarlet Knights, led by junior midfielder Katrina Martinelli (Moorestown, N.J.) with four goals – her seventh multi-goal game of the season.
Martinelli paces the Scarlet Knights with 28 points on 22 goals and six assists. The junior ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in free position goals (0.75/game) and fifth in goals per game (2.75).
The RU defense has been stingy all season, ranking first in the NCAA in scoring defense (6.13 goals per game). Senior goalie Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) sits first in the BIG EAST (with three-plus games played) in goals against average (6.71) and save percentage (.500).
Notre Dame has four players in double-digit points, led by senior attack Jaimie Morrison with 21 points. In the cage will be Ellie Hilling, who owns a 8.41 GAA with 35 saves. In her second year with the Irish, Head Coach Christine Halfpenny led the squad to a BIG EAST and NCAA berth last season.
Marquette (2-6) – in its first season of lacrosse – has dropped four-straight games and will take on Villanova on Friday. Freshman attack Claire Costanza leads MU with 23 points and a team-high 15 assists. Goalie Sarah Priem owns a 14.09 GAA with a .375 save percentage.
Head Coach Meredith Black became a Golden Eagle on Feb. 4, 2011 after spending the last seven seasons as an assistant with Towson, Notre Dame and California.
