Newark, Del. (March 9, 2013) – The Rutgers women’s lacrosse team earned a 7-4 road win over Delaware on Saturday afternoon at Delaware Stadium. Junior attack Megan Clements (Pennington, N.J.) and redshirt junior midfield Amanda Trendell (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) paced the Scarlet Knights (5-1).
It marked the third time in four years that RU has started 5-1. Junior midfielder Katrina Martinelli (Moorestown, N.J.) and freshman midfielder Chrissy Schreiber (East Meadow, N.Y.) both posted two goals in the win. Delaware (3-3) was paced by Abbie Hartman with two goals.
Senior captain Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) gave a strong performance in the cage, stopping five shots.
The Scarlet Knights struck first, running out to a 2-0 lead. Halley Barnes (Garnet Valley, Pa.) posted the opening goal off an assist from Trendell before the junior added an unassisted score of her own at the 20:17 mark.
The Blue Hens closed within one, 2-1, with a goal by Chelsea Fay, but Rutgers ripped off two-straight goals to end the half and bring a 4-1 advantage into the break. Schreiber corralled a pass from Clements and Martinelli converted on a free position shot.
RU did not slow down after halftime, tallying the first three goals. Martinelli snuck a shot past the UD keeper, Clements scored and Schreiber rocketed a goal into the back of the net to give the Scarlet Knights a commanding 7-1 lead with 16:12 to play.
Delaware poised a comeback, scoring the final three goals to come within three, 7-4, but would come no closer.
Rutgers returns home to face Hofstra on Wednesday, March 12. Game time is set for 3 p.m. on the RU Turf Field.
