Rutgers Women’s Lacrosse Travels to Monmouth
Scarlet Knights rank eighth in the country in scoring defense

  • West Long Branch, N.J. (February 28, 2013) – The Rutgers women’s lacrosse team travels to West Long Branch, N.J., for a noon matchup at Monmouth this Saturday, March 2 at Kessler Field.

    Rutgers (2-1) was last in action on Saturday, Feb. 23, coming up with a 5-3 win over Fairfield at the RU Turf Field. Junior midfielder Katrina Martinelli (Moorestown, N.J) and standout freshman Halley Barnes (Garnet Valley, P.A.) each tallied two goals in the win. Senior goalie Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) grabbed six saves in the cage.

    Martinelli paced the Scarlet Knights with nine goals, totaling multiple goals in every game. Barnes ranks third on the team with four goals through three games.

    Defensively, Rutgers ranks eighth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 5.33 goals per game. Kalata – ninth in the NCAA in save percentage (.576) – owns a 5.60 GAA with 19 saves. 

    Rutgers holds a perfect 10-0 record in the all-time series against Monmouth. This will be the eighth-consecutive season in which the two teams have met. The Scarlet Knights bested the Hawks last year, 13-7, behind five goals and two assists from Ali Steinberg.

    Monmouth (0-3) is coming off a 16-4 loss to No. 20 Navy on Sunday. Four different Hawks tallied a goal in the loss. Allison Stathius paces MU with five points on two goals and three assists. Kaleigh Gibbons and Cassie Campasano have each tallied three goals on the year.

    In the cage for Monmouth will be sophomore Katie Donohoe, who has stopped 30 shots on the season, allowing 14.67 goals per game. Head Coach Denise Wescott is in her fourth season with the Hawks after leading the squad to a NEC Title last season. MU assistant coach Eileen Ghent was a RU letterwinner.
