Piscataway, N.J. (February 10, 2013) – Behind five goals apiece from midfielders Stephanie Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.) and Katrina Martinelli (Moorestown, N.J.), the Rutgers women’s lacrosse team dropped Manhattan, 15-5, Sunday afternoon at the RU Turf Field at the Stadium Complex.

Martinelli added three assists for a career-high eight-point day. The five goals by Anderson matched a personal best for the senior captain. The 15 goals marked the most for the Scarlet Knights (1-0) since March 10, 2012 vs. Hofstra (15).

“I think we started the game extremely strong,” said head coach Laura Brand-Sias. “We trailed off towards the end of the first half, so our focus was regaining our focus for the second half, which I thought we did a nice job of doing.”

Senior captain Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) grabbed three saves in the win. Senior goalie Aimee Chotikul (Baltimore, Md.) allowed just two goals in 30 minutes of action. Manhattan (0-1) was paced by Carly Eskenazi with two goals.

Rutgers came out firing, ripping off five goals over the first 13 minutes to take a 5-0 lead. Back-to-back goals by Martinelli and Anderson gave RU an early 2-0 advantage. Anderson added another score a minute later off a dish from Martinelli. Senior attack Annie McGinley (Moorestown, N.J.) added the fourth score before Martinelli capped off the run.

Manhattan posted the final three scores before the half, including two free position goals, as the Scarlet Knights took a 5-3 lead into the break.

Anderson started the Scarlet Knights off in the second half with three of the first four goals, giving RU a 8-4 advantage. After a Manhattan goal by Megan Yarusso at the 21:45 mark brought the Jaspers with three, 8-5, the RU defense clamped down and did not allow a score for the remainder of the contest. The offense blasted off seven goals – including three by Martinelli – to account for the final score.

Rutgers will have 10 days before heading to Temple on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
