PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 12, 2012) – Rutgers women’s lacrosse will host three scrimmages as part of the 2012 fall schedule, head coach Laura Brand-Sias announced Wednesday.
The Scarlet Knights kick off their fall season hosting an all-day tournament on Sept. 22 (opponents to be determined). The squad then makes its way down to the University of Maryland on Oct. 13 to face a Terrapin team that advanced to the NCAA Final Four last season.
Rutgers returns home the following day to scrimmage the University of Southern California. The Women of Troy will be entering their first year of NCAA play in 2012-13 and will be led by head coach Lindsey Munday, captain of Team USA.
Rutgers, Penn State and James Madison square off on Oct. 20, as the squads participate in a round robin, all-day scrimmage. To end the fall slate, RU hosts Drexel under the lights on the Busch Recreation Field at 7 p.m. on Oct. 26.
Rutgers returns 21 letterwinners from a season ago, including goalkeeper Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) and midfielder Stephanie Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.). Last year, Kalata logged 886 minutes in the cage with 116 saves. Anderson played a major role for RU in 2012, tallying 41 goals and five assists for RU.
The Scarlet Knights finished the season 9-7 overall and had four Scarlet Knights – Rebecca Alley (Tewksbury N.J.), Anderson, Kalata and Ali Steinberg (Suffern, N.Y.) selected to All-Mid-Atlantic teams. Steinberg was also awarded with First Team All-BIG EAST honors, while Anderson notched second team accolades. In addition, graduated senior Danielle Mascera (Verona, N.J.) broke a 32-year-old RU single season assist record with 34 helpers.
