PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 26, 2012) – The Rutgers women’s lacrosse program, and the entire Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, is mourning the passing of Rita Sweeney. The former IWLCA All-American died on Aug. 9, 2012 after a long struggle with melanoma.

Sweeney, who played lacrosse for RU from 1984-87, died peacefully at her home in San Anselmo, Calif. at the age of 46. A New York City native, Sweeney was the epitome of a student-athlete. She was a three-time IWLCA regional All-American and the 1986-87 women’s lacrosse scholar-athlete, awarded to the letterwinning student-athlete with the highest GPA for the year.

Sweeney went on to become a physician and married Charley Ehmann in 2007. She is survived by her husband, her son, Charley John (3), her daughter, August Jeanne (4) and Charley’s children, Ruby (10) and Simon (15).

There will be a service of celebration of her life to be scheduled later in the fall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to: St. Aidan's Episcopal Church, PO box 629, Bolinas, CA, 94924, or Yoga for Cancer, PO box 64, Fairfax, CA, 94978-0064 or Melanoma Research Foundation, P.O. Box 759329, Baltimore, MD 21275-9329
