Washington, D.C. (April 28, 2012) – The Rutgers women’s lacrosse team could not sustain a 5-4 halftime lead, falling to No. 15/16 Georgetown by a score of 9-7 at the Multi-Sport Field Saturday afternoon. The Scarlet Knights were led offensively by junior midfielder Stephanie Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.) and junior attack Annie McGinley (Moorestown, N.J.) with three points apiece.
Rutgers ends its season with a 9-7 overall record, including a 4-4 mark in BIG EAST play. Georgetown (9-7, 5-3) will be the No. 4 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament. The Hoyas were led by Caroline Tarzian with five points on four goals and one assist.
Senior attack Brittany Davis (Wading River, N.Y.) posted two goals, while senior attack Danielle Mascera (Verona, N.J.) dished out two assists. In the cage, junior Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) registered eight saves.
The Scarlet Knights jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, as McGinley scored twice over the first 11:24 of the contest. Georgetown battled back with two-straight scores, before Davis quieted the run with a feed from McGinley.
The Hoyas knotted the game at four with 2:44 remaining in the half, but Davis – falling down in front of the net – scored on a breakaway from Anderson to give RU a 5-4 advantage at the break. Kalata made six stops over the first 30 minutes.
Anderson provided the first two RU goals of the second half to put the Scarlet Knights up 7-5 with 20:48 to play. The second score came on a pass from Mascera, leading the junior midfielder right down the alley.
Georgetown posted the next three goals to take its first lead of the contest, 8-7, at the 9:01 mark. GU’s Kelsi Bozel scored with 3:24 remaining to account for the final score. The Scarlet Knights were unable to control possession in the second half, as the Hoyas won six of the final seven draw controls.
