Piscataway, N.J. (April 15, 2012) – Breaking a 32-year-old single season record, senior attack Danielle Mascera (Verona, N.J.) dished out three assists, pushing Rutgers women’s lacrosse to a 13-10 win over Cincinnati Sunday afternoon at Yurcak Field. The RU senior class accounted for nine points on Senior Day.
The assist record was previously held by Nancy Isenberg, who dished out 28 assists in 1980. With her three helpers on the day, Mascera has dished out 31 in 2012 to become the new RU leader.
The Scarlet Knights (9-5, 4-2) were paced in scoring by sophomore midfielder Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.) with three goals, her fourth hat trick of the season. Redshirt junior Annie McGinley (Moorestown, N.J.) added two goals and two assists for RU.
Cincinnati (3-9, 0-5) was led in scoring Laura Simanski with three goals and two assists. In the cage, junior netminder Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) allowed just six goals while making eight saves. Junior Aimee Chotikul (Baltimore, Md.) allowed four goals in eight-plus minutes of action.
The RU seniors jumped on UC early, as attack Lindsey Watts (Hillsborough, N.J.) scored the first goal of the contest on a dish from Steinberg. Senior Kaitlyn Curran (North Brunswick, N.J.) buried a free position opportunity to give the Scarlet Knights a 2-0 advantage with 24:15 to play in the first half.
After a Cincinnati score, Rutgers rattled off the next four goals, holding a 6-1 lead with 7:33 to play in the first stanza. Mascera assisted Katrina Martinelli (Moorestown, N.J.) at the 16:51 mark to break the record. Cincinnati scored just before the break, as RU brought a 6-2 advantage into the locker room.
UC scored three of the first four goals in the second half to come within two, 7-5. The Scarlet Knights answered with a 6-1 run of their own to take a commanding 13-6 lead with 11:48 to play. Five different Scarlet Knights scored over the run, as junior midfielder Stephanie Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.) posted two scores.
The Bearcats scored four-straight to end the game, but Rutgers held on for a 13-10 victory.
Rutgers hits the road for the final two games of the regular season. RU will face No. 6 Loyola (Md.) Friday. April 20 at 7 p.m.
