Villanova, Pa. (April 5, 2012) – With an offensive outburst in the first half and a strong defensive effort in the second, Rutgers women’s lacrosse downed Villanova, 13-5, Thursday afternoon at Villanova Stadium. The Scarlet Knights were paced by sophomore midfielder Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.), who posted her third hat trick of the season with four goals.

Rutgers (7-4, 2-1) has now won six of its past seven contests, including two-straight in BIG EAST play. The Scarlet Knights received help from senior midfielder Ali Steinberg (Suffern, N.Y.) (one goal, three assists). Junior midfielder Stephanie Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.) posted her team-leading fifth hat trick of the season with three scores.

Villanova (2-8, 0-2) was paced by Justine Donodeo with three goals. Junior netminder Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) earned the win with five saves and just four goals allowed. Junior Aimee Chotikul (Baltimore, Md.) and freshman Candice Dandridge (Cherry Hill, N.J.) also saw time in the cage.

Rutgers came out firing to start the game, as Sbrilli scored three-straight goals over the first nine minutes. After burying a free position shot, the sophomore connected on passes from McGinley and Steinberg to put RU up 3-0 and force a Villanova timeout.

After Villanova came within two, 4-2, RU went on a 4-0 spurt to push its lead to six, 8-2, with 6:28 to play in the first half. The two teams would each score twice before the half to give the Scarlet Knights a 10-4 advantage going into the break.

Sbrilli started the second-half scoring with her fourth goal of the contest at the 19:09 mark. After an answer from Villanova’s Elise Bendinelli just over a minute later, the Rutgers defense was able to keep Villanova scoreless for the final 17:43 of the match. Anderson and freshman Melissa Arthur (Marlton, N.J.) finished off the scoring for RU to represent the final tally. The score was Arthur’s first of her career.

Rutgers continues its two-game road swing, heading to No. 2 Syracuse Saturday, April 7 for a 1 p.m. contest.
